The short answer is YES! Oatmeal is one of many foods that can attribute to an overall plan to help you increase your milk supply. These are not "magical" foods, however, they are foods that contain nutrients and minerals that a mother's body is deficient or low in. And no wonder! The miracle of birth uses up incredible amounts of nutrients to grow this new bundle of joy!
Breast milk has it's own list of requirements and if a mother's body doesn't have what it needs, it simply slows down production.
As a Holistic Nutritional Consultant, I look at the big picture – whole life of a client. If you are a mother currently challenged with low milk supply – Don’t Stress! (I know, easier said than done). It is really easy to do a quick google search in a panic, get a short list of answers and randomly start applying them one at a time.
Trust YOU know your body best
We all have a unique biochemistry and everyone’s life is truly unique. There is a beautiful synergy of things that need to work together to help elevate your milk production. Here is a list of topics that I use as I address the topic of Milk Supply with my clients. You can review each of these items and start your own plan for success!
I suggest making a list in a journal with these 5 topics and make a plan that includes improvement in all these areas, each day. Even one small change, like one extra glass of water, can make a difference to the whole picture.
5 Topics to Address = Increase Milk Supply!
1) Water (even before diet, I address adequate fluid intake)
2) Stress Level & Mental Attitude (which also affects digestion & absorption)
3) Diet (you can include extra oats here! :)
4) Herbs (ones safe for breastfeeding only – ie. fenugreek & blessed thistle)
* Individuality This is more of a reminder that you are uniquely and wonderfully made and if all of these other topics are addressed properly but improvement isn't happening, contact a professional who looks at your WHOLE PICTURE and can make additional suggestions for you and baby!
