This week we will be talking about Heart Health! This topic is especially close to my heart (pun intended) as my husband is challenged with this very disease and has made great improvements to his health through lifestyle and diet changes over the last few years. The good news is that this disease is preventable and managed well through holistic lifestyle and diet changes. How what can we eat to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease? FLAX SEEDS!
Canadian medical researchers and Agriculture Canada have discovered that the seed coat of flax seed (Linum usitatissimum) contains a very beneficial plant estrogen called the SDG flax lignin, which quickly lowers cholesterol and reverses atherosclerosis (plaque in the arteries) caused by high cholesterol levels.

One controlled clinical trial with high-cholesterol subjects compared those who ate muffins containing 50 grams of flax seed with subjects who ate muffins without flax seed (4 muffins per day for 3 weeks). The study found that flax seed has significant cholesterol-lowering effects: blood levels of LDL cholesterol declined 9.3 percent with flax.
Flax seed oil is rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids. Flax seed oil is my preference choir for salad oil. Remember that is must be kept in the fridge. Many people’s diets contain too much omega-6 oil. Flax seed oil can help bring balance to your essential fatty acid regulatory system and it is that balance that is critical to health.
There are many easy ways to incorporate flax seeds into your diet, but let's begin with the classic Heart Healthy Muffin!
